What Does “No Added Sugar” Actually Mean?

What Does “No Added Sugar” Actually Mean?

“No added sugar” sounds simple. But food labels love making simple things complicated.

So let’s make it clear: no added sugar does not always mean sugar-free.

It means sugar has not been added to the product. But the product can still contain sugars that are naturally present in ingredients like milk, fruit, nuts or cocoa.

That’s the serious version.

The njom version?

No added sugar means the snack can still taste good — it just needs to be smarter about how it gets there.

No added sugar ≠ sugar-free

This is the big one.

A product can be no added sugar and still contain some naturally occurring sugars.

A product that is sugar-free follows a different rule and usually has a very low sugar content.

So when you see:

No added sugar
Think: no regular sugar added to sweeten the product.

Sugar-free
Think: very low sugar content.

Both can be useful. They just do not mean the same thing.

Then how does it taste sweet?

Good question. This is where better snacks get interesting.

Many no-added-sugar products use sweeteners, fibres or smarter recipes to create sweetness and texture without adding regular sugar.

That does not automatically make every product good.

Some taste like “health food with a marketing budget.” Others actually taste like sweets, bars, chocolate or ice cream you would choose again.

That is the difference njom cares about.

We are not here for snacks that taste like punishment.
We are here for snacks that make your brain go: yep, this works.

What should you check on the label?

Do not just trust the front of the pack. Flip it around.

1. Sugars per 100 g

This tells you how much sugar is actually in the product.

2. Ingredients

Check where the sweetness comes from. If the product contains sweeteners, that should be clear in the ingredient list.

3. Protein, fibre and calories

A snack is not automatically “better” just because it has no added sugar. The full picture matters.

4. Portion size

Some products look great per serving but less impressive if you eat the whole pack.

Be honest. We all know how “just one piece” sometimes ends.

Why no added sugar snacks are popular

Because people still want sweet things.

They just do not always want the usual sugar overload that comes with them.

No added sugar snacks can be a good option when you want:

  • something sweet without the usual sugar bomb
  • a protein bar that feels more like a treat
  • chocolate that still tastes like chocolate
  • a smarter office snack
  • something for the drawer, gym bag or car that does not feel boring

The point is not to make snacking perfect.

The point is to make it less stupid.

The njom rule

If it says “no added sugar” but tastes like cardboard, it does not belong here.

A better snack still has to pass the real test:

Would you actually want another one?

Because if the answer is no, the label does not matter.

At njom, we look for snacks, drinks and treats that keep the craving alive but make the choice a little smarter.

Less added sugar.
More taste.
Zero boring compromises.

That is the whole idea.
